Johnathan Stanley charged with second-degree murder in the Surf Style shooting from Tuesday night and is being held on $750,000 bond. Great work by our detectives and other civilian staff, including our Real-Time Operations Center and video analyst, to nab the suspect within 24 hours.

A man who was alleged to have shot and killed a 22-year-old at a surf shop in Clearwater Beach on Tuesday evening has been arrested, according to the Clearwater police.

Initially called to the Surf Style store at 315 South Gulfview Blvd. just before 8 pm after receiving reports of a shooting on the shop’s second floor, authorities found that Rodney Sweeney, a 22-year-old resident of Largo, had been shot.

After being taken to a nearby hospital, Sweeney passed away.

On Thursday, the Clearwater Police Chief, Daniel Slaughter, informed the public that the individual who allegedly fired three gunshots inside the busy store had been arrested. The Chief identified the suspect only by his first name, Jonathan.

According to Slaughter, the investigators discovered that there was no apparent connection between the victim and the suspect, but it seemed like they were intentionally seeking confrontation.

Slaughter announced that the police would maintain an elevated level of surveillance on Clearwater Beach, as the spring break period approaches.

He emphasized that the safety of individuals visiting Clearwater, as well as its beaches, was of the utmost importance.

Slaughter acknowledged that despite having lower rates of violent crime in comparison to other locations, the city is not entirely resistant to the nationwide surge in violent crime.
