His son died at the scene while Murray was taken to hospital and later died of his injuries, local media reported, citing a police spokesman. The couple was driving their white Toyota Prado towards their home in Pretoria, South African media reported.
Murray’s job as a court-appointed company liquidator was to investigate the accounts of companies that had gone out of business, recover assets, and report any wrongdoing.
One such company was Bosasa, a government contractor specializing in prison services. The landmark Zondo commission on corruption found that the company extensively bribed politicians and government officials to obtain government contracts during the nine years of Jacob Zuma’s presidency, from 2009 to 2018.
Zuma refused to cooperate with the investigation, but denied the allegations of corruption. In 2018, the current president of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, said he would return a $35,000 (£27,300) donation from Bosasa.
An anti-corruption investigator found that he had misled parliament about the donation, but that finding was thrown out by the country’s High Court. Ramaphosa has also faced other allegations of corruption, which he denies.
Bosasa went into voluntary liquidation after banks closed their accounts. Murray also worked as a liquidator for companies linked to the Gupta brothers. Zondo’s commission found that the brothers, Ajay, Rajesh and Atul, attempted to influence political and economic decisions during Zuma’s presidency in a process known as “state capture.”
The Guptas moved to South Africa from India in 1993 and owned a large portfolio of companies that enjoyed lucrative contracts with South African government departments and state-owned companies.
South African authorities are currently working to have the Gupta brothers extradited from the United Arab Emirates, where they have been arrested, to stand trial. They have denied accusations of paying financial bribes to win contracts.
