A stranger fatally stabbed Christy Bautista of Harrisonburg, Virginia, while she was in Washington, DC for a concert. The incident left her with “30 acute force injuries.” The incident took place on March 31st, Friday, at the Ivy City Hotel. First-degree murder is the charge that the defendant, 43-year-old George Sydnor Jr., is facing.
The victim was discovered to be unconscious and unresponsive in a hotel room by police from the Metropolitan Police Department, who had been summoned to investigate the “trouble” at the hotel on New York Avenue. According to court records, Bautista arrived at the hotel about 6 p.m. Sydnor then rode up on his bicycle and looked to be listening at Bautista’s bedroom door.
“It does not appear that Sydnor knocked on the door or made his presence known to the decedent,” investigators said in court filings. A 911 caller nearby allegedly overheard a woman yelling for help as she was being shoved inside the room as Sydnor entered.
According to the station, CCTV footage taken from court records showed the victim shouting “Help! Help!” and recording the sound of the door crashing. One of the wounds allegedly penetrated his spine, perhaps resulting in paralysis. A kitchen knife was found at the scene, and Sydnor was discovered with blood and cuts on his hand.
Sydnor had two outstanding warrants for his arrest at the time of the incident. One of the arrest warrants was connected to an event that happened in October 2022, when a woman in southeast Washington, DC, said Sydnor took her cell phone and car keys at gunpoint. The second warrant for an arrest concerned a Maryland burglary case.
Sydnor’s legal representative entered a not guilty plea at the arraignment hearing. Sydnor is detained without posting bail. According to the victim’s postmortem report, the attack left him with “30 sharp force injuries.” As they grieve the passing of Christy Bautista, the police and the victim’s family have requested for privacy.
