Stu Lantz Career
He began his professional football career in 1968 when the San Diego Rockets chose him in the third round of the 1968 NBA Draft and the Oakland Oaks in the 1968 ABA Draft. Lantz played with the Houston Rockets in 1970-71, averaging 20.6 points and 5 rebounds per game. However, he injured his back during training during the 1976-77 season and never fully recovered. On July 2, 1977, a week and a half before his 31st birthday, Lantz announced his retirement.
He returned to journalism shortly after retiring, and his first position was as the Lakers’ color commentator in 1987. He worked alongside Chick Hearn, Paul Sunderland, and Joel Meyers at the time. He also works as a color commentator for Spectrum SportsNet alongside Bill Macdonald.
He was elected to the Southern California Sports Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 2018. He has also been selected as the top television color commentator multiple times by the Southern California Sports Broadcasters Association.
