This Wednesday (8), International Women’s Day, Rádio Cultura FM (103.3) will dedicate 24 hours of its programming to composers and performers of classical, Brazilian and jazz music.
The tributes to women begin at midnight, with the “Cultura Jazz” program, featuring the concert by singer, pianist and composer Nina Simone (1933-2003), held on May 6, 1988, in Hamburg, Germany, recorded by German Radio NDR and made exclusively available to Rádio Cultura, through a partnership with the EBU – European Union of Radio and Television.
The program continues during the day bringing works from different periods of music history, by composers such as Hildegard Von Bingen (1098-1179), Barbara Strozzi (1619-1677), Fanny Mendelssohn (1805-1847), Louise Farrenc (1804-1875 ), Clara Schumann (1819-1896), Ethel Smith (1902-1996), Amy Beach (1867-1944), Germaine Tailleferre (1892-1983), Lili Boulanger (1893-1918), Jeniffer Higdon, Ellen Reid, Gabriela Montero , in addition to Chiquinha Gonzaga (1847-1935), Tia Amélia (1897-1983), Tia Inah (1906-2003), Eliane Elias and Léa Freire.
Among the performers that make up the program are conductors such as Marin Alsop, Barbara Jones (1952-2014), JoAnn Falletta, Christina Pluhar and soloists such as pianists Guiomar Novaes (1895-1979), Eudóxia de Barros, Maria Teresa Madeira, Angela Cheng , Martha Argerich and Hélène Grimaud, as well as names such as Sol Gabetta (cello), Thea King (1925-207), (clarinet), Nuria Rial (soprano), Becky Baxter (harp), Lisa Batiashivili (violin), Milagro Caliva (bandoneon) and Alison Balsom (trumpet).
Among other attractions in the program dedicated to Women’s Day, at 5 pm, the program “Fim de Tarde” with maestro Julio Medaglia features an interview with the young Brazilian conductor Alexandra Arrieche. Currently director of the Olympia Symphony Orchestras, Washington, Henderson City Symphony Orchestra.
“Conexão Europa”, at 8 pm, presents an unprecedented concert recorded in October 2021 at the Walt Disney Concert Hall, in Los Angeles, United States, with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra and the participation of the Italian pianist Beatrice Rana, under conducted by the Finnish Susanna Mälkki. Among the works that are part of the repertoire of this concert is “Vista”, by the composer (also Finnish) Kaija Saariaho.
Closing the program on March 8, at 11 pm, the program “What’s New” features the recently released album “Music for Soprano & Guitar by Female Composers” (Music by women composers for soprano and guitar). Recorded this year by Spanish soprano Cristina Bayón and guitarist Jesús Pineda, the album brings together works by authors such as Clara Schumann, Fanny Mendelssohn, Isabella Colbrán (1785-1845), Maria Malibrán (1808-1836), Pauline Viardot Garcia (1821-1910 ) and Pauline Duchambge (1776-1858).
