Odair reinforces Santos’ search for signings, but asks for calm: ‘We don’t have money left’

The discouraging start to the season boosted the need for more reinforcements for the Santos squad. During a press conference after Peixe’s victory in the Brazilian Cuplast Thursday (9), coach Odair Hellmann discussed Alvinegro’s financial difficulties and the importance of hiring for the team.

– If we had money left over to make 25 signings… But Santos doesn’t have it. Santos has to be creative, visualize the market, the price is too expensive. Any player is 10 million, 15 million, 20 million, salary up there. Entrepreneurs go crazy… Calm down! he declared.

Faced with a not very favorable scenario for adding new players to the squad, the Santos coach spoke about the value of a more qualified squad and the need for healthy competition within the group.

– We will sit down from tomorrow (10), with much more time. We have to act fast and use this time to improve. Santos is open to possibilities. I say this little publicly, because it greatly affects the situation of hiring, of values. Let’s talk to add more players, create a bigger dispute within the group and raise the level of internal competitiveness. Starting tomorrow we will do this – said Hellmann.

Odair does not want to create a false expectation in Santos fans and considers the possible delay that the club will face to have agreements with new players.

– I confess that in this first week I don’t know if players will arrive, the market is not that simple. Especially for a team that doesn’t have the money to hire. We know that to hire you need money. The president and the GC (Management Committee) continue to make an effort. Let’s take it easy. The more we can speed up the process, the better. But we’re not going to create that expectation for the fans, who in a little while nobody shows up and it seems that everything is wrong. We will not be slow, but everything in due time – explained the coach.

Earlier this week, one day after the elimination of Peixe in the Paulista Championship, the captain of Santos held a meeting with Falcão and president Andres Rueda to talk about the season’s planning and give explanations about the role played in Itu.

– I have meetings with Falcão every day, with the president. It was a planning meeting, talking about the previous game. One of the things I said was about the exception (defeat to Ituano) not becoming the rule. In addition to training planning, the possibility of adding players to the squad – concluded Odair.
