Mike Lynch is an American journalist who serves as a sports correspondent for WCVB Channel 5’s award-winning sports department in Boston, Massachusetts. He has served in this role for over three decades. As a result, Lynch was inducted into the Massachusetts Broadcasters Hall of Fame among other several broadcasters in June 2023.
He has also received other recognitions throughout his career. Lynch has been voted 16 times by the National Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association as Massachusetts “Sportscaster of the Year”. He was voted in 1985-1991, 1999, 2003, and 2006-2012 breaking the record as the most honored of anyone in the award history.
Mike Lynch Education
Lynch attended Swampscott High School in Swampscott, Massachusetts in 1971, before moving to Phillips Exeter Academy.
He then attended Harvard University where he quarterbacked and kicked for the Harvard team that won the 1975 Ivy League Football Championship. He also played for the Crimson baseball team as a first baseman. Lynch graduated in 1977 with a BS in Arts and Sciences, Political Science, and Government.

Lynch began his broadcasting career through radio as a color commentator for high school football and basketball broadcasts at WLYN Radio in Lynn in 1974. He later moved to WITS radio which is now known as WMRE in Boston in 1977. He hosted the station’s pre-game shows of the Boston Bruins and Boston Red Sox. Lynch was also the radio voice of Harvard University’s football broadcasts.
Lynch joined Hearst Argyle WCVB-TV as a sports anchor in 1982. He later served as the principal weeknight sports anchor for WCVB since September 1985. He founded “High Five,” a weekly NewsCenter 5 report which is a high school sports series highlighting the achievements of high school student-athletes. The reports have been lauded by critics and received numerous honors for their consistency in covering high school athletics for over 30 years.
Lynch has hosted the weekly sports program “Patriots All Access,” from 1995 to 2008. This is a behind-the-scenes look at New England’s NFL franchise. During the Patriots’ pre-season games, he served as the broadcast commentator. Mike has also done play-by-play coverage for college football, New England Patriots, and the Boston Celtics. He hosted “Eagles Preview” for eleven years on Channel 5. This is a show on Boston College’s weekly football coaches.
