Mark Oppenheimer Biography

Mark Oppenheimer is an American journalist, author, and Senior Editor currently working at Tablet and hosts the podcast Unorthodox. He has contributed to Slate and Mother Jones, among many other publications.

Before joining Tablet, Oppenheimer spent six years as New York Times writer where he wrote the Beliefs column, about religion.

In addition, He is the author of two books, a founding editor of The New Haven Review, and an occasional commentator on NPR’s All Things Considered and Day to Day.

As of now, Mark serves as host of the Unorthodox podcast, about Jews and Jewish life, from Tablet magazine. He teaches a creative writing class at Yale and also runs the Yale Journalism Initiative.

He served for The New York Times Magazine as a magazine writer and an essayist for The American Scholar. From 2008 to 2009,  Oppenheimer was a lecturer in the English and Political Science departments of Yale University and a visiting professor of creative writing at Wellesley College.
