Liesl Tommy is a South African-American director ell known for her stage work. She became the first woman of color to be nominated for the Tony Award for Best Direction of a Play where she directed the Broadway production of Danai Gurira’s Eclipsed (2017).
Liesl began her career as a theatre director in the United States. She directed in there’s such as Dallas Theater Center, Berkeley Repertory Theatre, California Shakespeare Theater, La Jolla Playhouse, Center Stage, and Sundance East Africa. She re-envisions classic plays by creating retellings extracted from her own personal experiences and stories in life.
Liesl also advocates for a diverse theatre experience in her shows. She featured various African-American actors in her 2012 production of Hamlet at California Shakespeare Theatre. In 2014, she directed one of her remakes of a classical production which was a version of Les Misérables.
Her directorial credits include Kid Victory, a new musical produced Off-Broadway at the Vineyard Theatre in 2017, Pass Over by Antoinette Nwandu at the Steppenwolf Theatre Company, and a theatrical version of the animated Disney film Frozen at the Hyperion at Disneyland in Anaheim, California.
