On Monday, a shooting outside a high school in Arlington resulted in the death of a 16-year-old boy and left another student injured.
The 15-year-old suspect appeared in court for a hearing, during which additional information about the incident was revealed.
The victim who passed away in the shooting at Lamar High School was identified as Jashawn Poirier. Poirier’s family members created an online fundraising page in his memory of him, describing the 16-year-old as a friendly and reserved individual who enjoyed activities like video games, football, and spending time with friends and family.

Multiple reports of a shooting at the campus were received by Arlington police on Monday at approximately 6:55 a.m.
During the suspect’s detention hearing on Tuesday, it was revealed that the entire incident had been captured on surveillance video, which was also used to identify the suspect.
The footage showed the suspect firing a long gun into a crowd of students outside the school, resulting in the fatal shooting of Jashawn Poirier and shrapnel injuries to a 16-year-old girl who was sitting on a bench outside the entrance. The injured girl was rushed to the hospital by a parent.
The suspect fled the shooting scene but was later apprehended and taken to the Tarrant County Juvenile Detention Center with the help of witnesses who assisted the officers. The motive behind the shooting is still being investigated by the authorities.
At the hearing held on Tuesday, the judge ruled to keep the suspect in custody, and another hearing is scheduled to take place in ten days.
During the proceedings, the judge pointed out to prosecutors that after examining the charging documents, it seemed that officers had not established a clear link between the shooting and the 15-year-old who was taken into custody.
The judge raised questions about how the police had concluded that the teenager was directly responsible for the shooting. Following the hearing, the suspect’s defense attorney, Lisa Herrick, released a statement saying that she had met with the young defendant, who had no prior experience with the juvenile justice system and was understandably emotional.
Herrick described the case as tragic and urged people to wait until all the facts and circumstances of the incident are revealed before making judgments.
