The Pistons faced off against the 15-time NBA champion Boston Celtics in the 1985 NBA playoffs. Isiah and his side ultimately suffered a defeat after a thrilling game. The Pistons and Celtics met again in the NBA playoffs of 1987, but this time the series ended in a draw after two rounds. However, Larry Bird dashed their hopes. After 32 years, they finally made it to the championship game when they faced the Celtics the next year and triumphed.
The Los Angeles Lakers, who were coached by Magic Johnson, James Worthy, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, met the Detroit Pistons in the 1988 championship game. Isiah and Johnson shared courtside pecks before the games started as a symbol of their close friendship.
