Investigation of the jewels should remain in the 1st instance, say prosecutors

Members of the PGR (Attorney General’s Office) heard by the column in a reserved manner believe that the jewelry case will be investigated in the first instance of the Judiciary, and not in the STF (Federal Supreme Court). The assessment is that the Attorney General of the Republic, Augusto Aras, will not file a complaint against former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL).

For prosecutors, the case demands in-depth investigation, especially in light of new revelations in daily doses. A subprosecutor compared the situation to the works of crime novel writer Agatha Christie, with the discovery of new clues in each chapter.

The investigation has been conducted by attorney Alexandre Jabur, from the Federal Public Ministry in São Paulo. Jabur has been praised by his peers for his “technical” work.

Prosecutors also said that the supposed link between the jewelry case and the sale of the Petrobras Landulpho Alves refinery (RLAM), located in Bahia, is serious. Yesterday (9), senator Omar Aziz (PSD-AM) stated that he will investigate the transaction for the Mubadala Capital group, an investment fund from Abu Dhabi, in the United Arab Emirates, one month after the arrival of the jewels in Brazil. The parliamentarian says that the sale was made below the price.

According to the Estado de S. Paulo newspaper, the Bolsonaro government tried to illegally receive jewelry valued at R$16.5 million that were gifts from the Saudi Arabian regime. The parts, retained by the Federal Revenue, were the targets of eight attempts to be recovered by the then government.

The necklace, the pair of earrings, the ring and the watch were given as a gift by the government of Saudi Arabia to the then first lady, Michelle Bolsonaro, who said she did not know about the gift.

The jewels were found in the backpack of Marcos André dos Santos Soeiro, who was an advisor to the then Minister of Mines and Energy, Bento Albuquerque. He was part of a Brazilian delegation that went to the Middle East in October 2021 and landed with the jewels at Guarulhos airport.

The jewels were not declared to the IRS. According to the legislation, anyone who enters the country with goods worth more than US$ 1,000 must pay import tax equivalent to 50% of the value of the product.
