Housewives are still a significant portion of the population and they do have Social Security Rights. According to the latest data published by the IBGE, in 2019, 7% of the Brazilian population declared themselves to be housewives, that is, that person who takes care of their own home without working outside the home, developing activities in taking care of the house. And one way to access INSS benefits is to contribute to the institute if you wish.
“The Social Security Rights of the housewife guarantee very important and fundamental rights, especially when she is experiencing a health problem or when she is close to retirement age and needs to stop working”, explains the partner social security lawyer. founder of Brisola Advocacia, Isabela Brisola.
Dedication equal to that of a conventional job
What is clear, given what the specialist points out, is that, regardless of the type of work, activities and functions of the home also require dedication from women and, in many cases, are as recurrent as formal work – even if it involves family treatment. .
Therefore, it is important for women to contribute to the INSS in order to have a provision at the end of life or at a delicate moment.
“Women have different phases in their lives: either when they have a baby or when they have a health problem that affects them unexpectedly. In addition, age advances for everyone and can prevent them from staying at work”, exemplifies Isabela, noting that many housewives do not know that they can contribute to the INSS and have difficulties due to lack of organization for these moments.
Forms of contribution to the INSS of the housewife
Housewives can contribute to Social Security in different ways, through the conventional contribution, the simplified model and even the optional low-income contribution, which requires compliance with requirements.
The model is for that housewife who wants to retire with an amount above the minimum wage. The rate of payment is 20% of the minimum wage. Payment is made through the Social Security Guide (GPS), which can be paid monthly or quarterly;
The plan is for those who want to retire with the minimum wage. In this case, the contribution will be 11% of the rate and payment will also be made via GPS;
- • Low-income optional
In this case, it is important to meet the following requirements: belonging to a low-income family (monthly income of up to two minimum wages); be part of a family registered with CADÚnico and whose situation has been updated in the last two years; not having paid activity; dedicate themselves to domestic work in their own home or do not have their own income. Here the rate will be 5% on the minimum wage.
What are the rights that the INSS gives to housewives?
After the 2019 Pension Reform, the housewife will have to meet two requirements to be entitled to retirement: age and minimum contribution. Thus, she will need to be 62 years old and have contributed for 15 years, considering the payment of rates to the INSS between 5% and 11%.
However, at retirement age, if the woman has never contributed and has a low per capita family income (1/4 of the minimum wage per person), she can apply for the BPC/LOAS Assistance Benefit in the amount of one minimum monthly wage.
In addition to these rights, this portion of the population may be entitled to sickness or disability retirement assistance as long as they meet the benefit requirements.
“If the woman was paying the INSS before the Social Security Reform, she needs to see if she is in the transition rules for retirement by age”, recalls Isabela.
