From Beijing, Saudis and Iranians announce resumption of relations – 03/10/2023 – Nelson de Sá

The website of the newspaper Al Riyadh, from the Saudi Arabian capital, highlighted the two flags (above), with the words in Arabic: “In response to the initiative of the Chinese president… The Kingdom and Iran agree to resume diplomatic relations and reopen their embassies”.

And the website of the foreign-facing Iranian channel PressTV carried a video, describing: “Iran and Saudi Arabia reached an agreement in the Chinese capital to restore their diplomatic relations and reopen embassies and missions, seven years later.”

In the headline of the Chinese Global Times, an overseas newspaper, “Saudi Arabia, Iran agree to resume relations and reopen embassies after talks in Beijing”.

The Guancha portal, from Shanghai, reproduced, from Wang: “This is a victory for dialogue and peace, which brings great good news and gives a clear signal to the current turbulent world.”

REGIONAL

In the New York Times, at first without China in the statement, “Saudi Arabia and Iran agree to restore ties in major regional change”.

In the Wall Street Journal’s subheadline, “Deal marks diplomatic victory for Beijing in a region where the US has long dominated geopolitics.”
