As a child, she would join her parents on backpacking trips in the Sierra Nevada mountains. She is one of the main cast members of the show, along with her husband Otto Kilcher and other members of the Kilcher family. The show follows their lives on the homestead near Homer, Alaska, where they live off the land and cope with the challenges of living in Alaska. She also helped Otto with various tasks around the farm, such as building fences, repairing machines, hauling wood, and driving tractors. She also has faced threats from predators, such as bears and coyotes; natural disasters, such as earthquakes and avalanches; and accidents, such as injuries and fires.
