Ben Braun is a former men’s college basketball coach from the United States. He is currently the Pac-12 Network’s studio and game basketball analyst. He was the head men’s basketball coach at Siena Heights University from 1977 until 1985. He has three times been selected Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year.
From 1986 to 1996, he held the same position at Eastern Michigan University, from 1996 to 2008 at the University of California, Berkeley, and from 2008 to 2014 at Rice University. Ben has a coaching record of 615-517 throughout his career. Ben coached the Eastern Michigan Eagles men’s basketball team for 185 games, the most in the program’s history.

After earning his degree from Wisconsin in 1975, Ben started working as a coaching assistant at Washington Park High School in Racine. He coached high school basketball for two years before taking over as head coach at Siena Heights. He spent eight years at Siena Heights, where he led the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) institution to a 148-103 record and five playoff tournaments.
Before the 1985-86 season, Ben was named associate head coach at Eastern Michigan. He was elevated to temporary head coach on January 15, 1986, midway through the season. His Hurons (Eagles from 1991 onwards) made the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history within two years.
Ben guided the Eagles to four postseason berths during his 11 years at Eastern Michigan, including three NCAA trips. His 185-132 record earned him the Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year award three times. He was the Eastern Michigan Eagles men’s basketball coach with the most wins (185).
During the 1989 Maccabiah Games, Ben was named head coach of the United States men’s basketball team. However, the team was defeated in the final by Team Israel. Ben took over as head coach at Cal before the 1996-97 season, succeeding Todd Bozeman. Expectations were low because the Golden Bears were anticipated to finish in the bottom half of the conference.
Despite this, his team advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 and finished second in the league. By ending the season 23-9, the squad set a school record for the most wins by a Bear coach in his first year with the program.
