Gawande can also be found in Boston, Massachusetts, at Brigham and Women’s Hospital practicing general and endocrine surgery. In public health, He is the executive director of Ariadne Labs. He is also the chairman of a nonprofit that works on reducing deaths in surgery globally titled Lifebox.

In the year 2002, Atul published his first book titled Complications: A Surgeon’s Notes on an Imperfect Science. Atul released his second book in April 2007 called Better: A Surgeon’s Notes on Performance.

The book talks about 3 virtues that Atul considers to be most important for success in medicine including ingenuity, doing right, and diligence. Gawande gives examples in the book of people who have embodied these virtues. Also, the book aspires to present many sides of contentious medical issues such as treatment variation between hospitals, physicians’ role in capital punishment, and malpractice law in the US.

He released his third book in the year 2009 called The Checklist Manifesto: How to Get Things Right. It talks about the importance of organization and preplanning in both the larger world and medicine. In 2010, the book reached the New York Times hardcover nonfiction bestseller list.

In October 2014, Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters, in the End, was released. It then became a #1 New York Times bestseller. The book talks about the effect of medical procedures on terminally ill people, assisted living, and end-of-life choices. Being Mortal was the basis of Frontline, a documentary for the PBS television series which was initially broadcast on the 10th of February 2015.
