He went on to appear in several television advertisements and off-Broadway productions after graduating. He later joined CBS News as a TV Commercials producer in 1976. He then worked on 60 Minutes before moving on to produce CBS Reports between 1978 and 1985.
He worked as a correspondent for The American-Israel Connection in 1982. Later, in the early 1980s, he collaborated with Bill Moyers as the producer of Our Times With Bill Moyers (1983) and Crossroads (1984).
He got a position at CBS News in 1976 as a producer for Who is Who, a personality-driven television show. This resulted in a long-term position as the producer for 60 Minutes. To name a few, he created “Inside Afghanistan” and “Kissinger and the Oil Embargo” in this capacity.
He later rose to the rank of executive producer for CBS Reports, a job he held for seven years. He was quickly followed by another post as executive producer of West 57th, a long-format news program starring Meredith Vieira.
He was appointed president of NBC News in 1993 to restore the news division’s credibility. This came after Dateline NBC simulated an explosion during a truck safety report.
In just three years, he guided NBC Nightly News with host Tom Brokaw to the number-one-rated nightly news show. He also increased the frequency of Dateline from once a week to numerous nights per week.
Today was also relocated to a new $15 million street-side studio, Studio 1A. He replaced Bryant Gumbel with Matt Lauer on the show. Today was the highest-rated morning news show during Lauer’s tenure.
Furthermore, MSNBC was founded under Lack’s leadership. Andy left the news division in 2001 to become NBC’s president and chief operations officer.
